Professional Engineer

Permits an individual licensed by the North Carolina Board of for Engineers and Surveyor as a Professional Engineer to provide a service or creative work, the adequate performance of which requires engineering education, training, and experience, in the application of special knowledge of the mathematical, physical, and engineering sciences to such services or creative work as consultation, investigation, evaluation, planning, and design of engineering works and systems, planning the use of land and water, engineering surveys, and the observation of construction for the purposes of assuring compliance with drawings and specifications, including the consultation, investigation, evaluation, planning, and design for either private or public use, in connection with any utilities, structures, buildings, machines, equipment, processes, work systems, projects, and industrial or consumer products or equipment of a mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic or thermal nature, insofar as they involve safeguarding life, health or property, and including such other professional services as may be necessary to the planning, progress and completion of any engineering services.

Other Requirements

To be licensed as a professional engineer, an applicant shall be of good character and reputation, submit five character references to the Board, three of whom are professional engineers or individuals acceptable to the Board with personal knowledge of the applicant's engineering experience, comply with the requirements of NC G.S. Chapter 89C, and meet the requirements related to education, examination, and experience. Exemptions

Certain full-time engineering faculty members or certain persons possessing an earned doctoral degree in engineering may apply for and be granted waiver of the fundamentals of engineering examination and admission to the principles and practice of engineering examination.
